Variscite is a secondary aluminium phosphate.
It is valued for its green hues and relative rarity. It is often mistaken for chrysoprase; it can be distinguished by its lower hardness and a more waxy appearance. It has been used since prehistoric times to make beads, ornaments and jewellery.
Etymology
From the German "Varisz", after the Vogtland region (Germany), where it was first described.
