Vivianita
Fe²⁺₃(PO₄)₂·8H₂O · Fosfatos
Vivianite is a hydrated iron phosphate, photosensitive and linked to organic decomposition in the presence of water and iron.
It forms when phosphate from decomposing human or animal bodies comes into contact with water and iron. For this origin it is considered a “necromineral”. It has been found in mammoth tusks. Also in corpses buried for several centuries.
It is photosensitive and degrades by oxidation. With light exposure it darkens over time, changing from blue to green. Nearly colourless or greenish tones turning deep blue before degrading have also been described. The colour change is tied to its photosensitivity and progressive oxidation.
Etymology
Named in honour of John Henry Vivian (1785–1855), British mineralogist and politician who discovered it in 1817.
