Plomo from Minas de Riotinto, Riotinto, Huelva, Andalucía, España — Terrium

Description

Elongate, sculptural mass of melted lead, with a rough surface and oxidised grey tones. Its vertical form recalls a stalagmite or an anthropomorphic figure, with natural texture characteristic of the spontaneous cooling of molten metal.

History of this specimen

Collected personally in 2022 on one of the Riotinto spoil heaps. I found this specimen in situ, which gives it strong field value and a direct connection with the area.

About Plomo

Not a mineral in the strict sense, but metallic lead in pure form, probably the result of industrial processes or past smelting in the mining district.

About the locality

Located at Riotinto, one of the oldest mining complexes in the world, this specimen comes from a historic area marked by more than 5,000 years of metal extraction.
