Celestina from La Segarra, Torà, Lleida, Catalunya, España — Terrium

Description

Large specimen with very sharp, elongated crystals growing inwards into a fracture. Aesthetic specimen.

About Celestina

Celestine is a strontium sulphate, formula SrSO₄. Although it takes its name from the Latin "caelestis" for the sky-blue colour of many specimens, it can also be colourless, white or greyish.

About the locality

Torà, in La Segarra (Lleida), is known for celestine on light-coloured matrix, with crystals that grew in fractures and cavities of the rock. During the 1990s and 2000s many specimens were recovered from road cuttings, but the council eventually fenced off the area and prohibited any extraction.
