Description
Sky-blue hemimorphite botryoidal coatings in natural cavities, with good colour but modest crystal development. Contrasts with a dark, porous, earthy matrix. Matrix somewhat chaotic.
History of this specimen
Although it does not stand out aesthetically, I keep it for possible exchanges or comparative studies. It is not part of the main collection.
About Hemimorfita
Hemimorphite is a secondary zinc mineral, common in the oxidised zones of sulphide deposits. It occurs as botryoidal and stalactitic masses or as tabular crystals. Valued for its light blue colour and texture.
About the locality
Located near Hayden, Arizona, the 79 Mine is known for sky-blue hemimorphite and other species such as wulfenite and smithsonite. Although not in regular active operation, specimens extracted by collectors still reach the market.
