Description

Well-defined metallic galena crystals and reddish-brown rhombohedral siderite crystals, in a cavity on brown matrix with green tones—paragenesis and matrix typical of this locality.

About Galena

Galena is a lead sulphide, PbS, and one of the principal ore minerals of this metal. It commonly forms cubic crystals or metallic lead-grey masses, with high density and marked cleavage. Classic paragenesis of Corta de San Valentín.

About the locality

Corta San Valentín, in La Unión, forms part of the Sierra Minera de Cartagena-La Unión. It is an open pit mine for lead, zinc and iron, known for associations of sulphides and carbonates such as galena and siderite.
