Lollingita
Lollingita is a mineral with formula FeAs₂, in the Arseniuros group. This specimen comes from Mina Monchi, Burguillos del Cerro, Badajoz, Extremadura, España and joined the Terrium collection in 1989.
Description
Fine carpet of bright metallic lollingite crystals on a very massive black magnetite matrix
History of this specimen
It comes from the same place where my car broke down on the way to the Salamanca fair, where it was given to me as an apology for a misunderstanding.
About Lollingita
This iron diarsenide typically occurs as prismatic crystals or lustrous lenticular masses. Mineralogically, it forms the «iron triangle» along with pyrite (iron disulphide, FeS₂) and arsenopyrite (iron sulfoarsenide, FeAsS), with löllingite itself being the diarsenide (FeAs₂).
About the locality
The Monchi Mine (Burguillos del Cerro, Badajoz) is a former iron mine internationally famous for its skarn geology. It stands out for its extraordinary variety of rare minerals (such as vonsenite and löllingite) and is now protected as a Site of Scientific Interest due to the bat colonies living inside.
