Cavansita
Cavansita is a mineral with formula Ca(VO)Si₄O₁₀·4H₂O, in the Fosfosilicatos group. This specimen comes from Wagholi Quarry, Wagholi, Pune, Maharashtra, India and joined the Terrium collection in 2021.
Description
Deep blue cavansite rosette in a cavity with well-formed heulandite crystals, on basaltic volcanic matrix.
About Cavansita
Cavansite is the close 'twin' of pentagonite. The two are dimorphs: they share the same chemical composition but crystallise differently under differing formation conditions, chiefly temperature. Cavansite forms deep blue radial-acicular rosettes.
About the locality
The world’s best locality for cavansite and pentagonite. They form in the Deccan basalts, in vesicular and brecciated cavities. Formation involved temperatures of 120–200 °C and hydrothermal replacement alongside zeolites such as heulandite and stilbite.
