Amatista from Sary Shagan Amethyst Occurrence, Moiynkum District, Jambyl, Kazajistán — Terrium

Description

Robust, geometric, angular, doubly terminated amethyst crystals of intense violet colour with visible zoning. They grow on a narrow, tall matrix, almost as a pedestal.

History of this specimen

One of the crystals has a small, almost imperceptible chip that I only noticed on arrival and that made me hesitate a lot over whether to return it. But after having it at home for a few days and enjoying its sculptural form I decided to keep it. Yes—the right call.

About Cuarzo

Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz; its colour is due to the presence of iron.

About the locality

Although geologically they form at Sary Shagan, these amethysts are known by the name of the city that guards them—Priozersk. The name sounds idyllic—it means "by the lake"—but for decades it was a closed Soviet city, a ghost town erased from maps for military secrecy. While these crystals were forming in the silence underground, above ground part of the pulse of the Cold War was being decided. In fact, right here, over their heads, on 4 March 1961, a ballistic missile in flight was intercepted, a milestone that, besides leaving the West breathless, demonstrated that anti-missile defence was technically possible. And over the atmosphere of this same area, the Soviets detonated nuclear charges to study the effects of EMP, the electromagnetic pulse, confirming something that was already anticipated but had not until then been tested so brutally: after such a detonation, everything with electrical circuits becomes unusable. Today the area is semi-abandoned, with buildings in active collapse, but it remains a military base that the Kazakhs from time to time lease to Russia so that they can continue whatever tests they need. So this is, in essence, a true Cold War amethyst, a gem that grew listening to the best-kept secrets of the defunct Soviet Union.

Etymology
From the Greek "a-méthystos", meaning "not drunk". Not a poetic metaphor but an ancient medical prescription. The Greeks believed that if they drank wine from cups carved from this mineral, or placed a stone under the tongue while drinking, they would not become drunk. The mineral name is literally its supposed main function: "the antidote to inebriation".
