Calcita Botrioidal Amarilla
Calcita is a mineral with formula CaCO₃, in the Carbonatos group. This specimen comes from Cantera Campomorto, Montalto di Castro, Viterbo, Lazio, Italia and joined the Terrium collection in 2025.
Description
Black, lustrous piece with a cavity sprinkled with numerous yellow calcite spherules. Several loose spheres are also present on the exterior.
About Calcita
Calcites from Campomorto are valued for their uncommon globular habit and strong contrast with the basaltic matrix. They form in vesicles in basalt during rapid cooling.
About the locality
Located in northern Lazio, the Campomorto quarry is a basalt operation known for vesicular cavities lined with secondary minerals, especially calcite. In these vesicles, crystallisation commonly produces globular aggregates, stalactitic forms or botryoidal coatings, often accompanied by zeolites.
