Calcita Escamosa from Yaogangxian W-Sn ore field, Yizhang Co., Chenzhou, Hunan, China — Terrium

Description

Very delicate structure. Crystals as thin flakes with an ethereal aspect, translucent at the edges. Under UV light it shows intense red fluorescence.

About Calcita

Calcite is a widely distributed carbonate in the Earth’s crust; it crystallises in the trigonal system and adopts multiple habits. This laminar variety forms very thin plates, often translucent, with reddish fluorescence under UV due to inclusions and natural activators.

About the locality

The Yaogangxian mining district is well known for its complex paragenesis and mineral diversity, with more than 200 species documented. Its hydrothermal cavities produce scaly calcites of exceptional purity, some known as calcite roses, and others often associated with fluorite, quartz, sphalerite and cassiterite.
