Description

Small specimen of tabular, lenticular calcite growing on sphalerite matrix.

About Calcita

Calcite from Trepča typically occurs as tabular or stepped aggregates on dark sphalerite with resinous lustre. It is a recognisable local habit, noted for the contrast, the modified rhombohedral layers, and its intense red fluorescence under UV.

About the locality

Trepča is one of the major polymetallic deposits in Europe, noted for calcite–sphalerite associations in complex sulphide veins. It produced thousands of classic specimens over decades.
