Cuarzo Prasio from Isla de Sérifos, Koutalas / Megalo Livadi, Pireo, Cícladas, Grecia — Terrium

Description

Aggregate of green quartz (prase) forming an artichoke-like group: a dominant crystal surrounded by smaller crystals. On the matrix, small rosettes of specular haematite. Typical of Serifos.

About Cuarzo

Prase is a green variety of quartz coloured by microscopic inclusions of actinolite. On Serifos the quartz crystals grow aligned and parallel, producing the distinctive vegetal-looking forms. This habit is characteristic of Serifos.

About the locality

Many years ago the island authorities banned mineral collecting. No new specimens have come out for some time. These classic pieces command higher prices.
